More and more beekeepers around the world are witnessing the decline of their bee colonies. This massive dying out of bees, denoted by the abbreviation CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder) has not only serious consequences for the balance in nature and the pollination of plants, but also for the economy. The EU project Bee-Doc stands on three research pillars. The first is directed to diagnosing the diseases and the evolution of simple instruments for determining bee illnesses. The second pillar is the evolution of the strategy for the prevention of these diseases and the third is the evolution of new methods of treatment which would be less reliant on the protracted chemical therapy that we use today.
