Carp was first kept in ancient Rome. Romans brought it from their eastern provinces. The carp is ideal for farming. It is big, omnivorous, it gains weight fast and has tasty meat. The first mention of its systematic farming dates back to the 11th century and the greatest boom in pond farming came in the 15th and 16th centuries.
